Related to #1842.

I had to migrate the README to markdown for technical reasons.

@UlrichB22 Did you check if the files you converted to markdown are included into the sphinx docs (requiring rst format)?

The Sphinx docs don't use the README, but I forgot to update pyproject.toml. Thanks for asking.
