I see metro doesn't support package.json import maps, which is pretty limiting when you make cross platform modules.

Here is an example use-case mafintosh/streamx#105 (16 million weekly downloads, so pretty popular) where I'd love to make this work in RN but can't without relying on upstream doing things with configs which isn't optimal.

Any reason why and is that something I can contribute if not?

Hi @mafintosh - Metro added import maps support in Metro 0.81.3 / React Native 0.79.

What you're doing there should work afaict. Do you have a repro?

Interesting! Likely I'm doing something wrong on my end then, I will check again. Do you know if we have some documentation of the support in metro?

This ended up working: mafintosh/streamx#106. Neither Metro nor Node.js seems to support mapping to external packages in package.json#imports so that part wasn't working, as intended. Emphasis on the comma.

Ah, yeah that's right - remapping directly to external packages is out of spec. Glad the shim works.
