The problem

Hi there,

I wanted to report an issue with WAU attempting to apply updates to any of the JetBrains IDEs (we use PyCharm, IntelliJ IDEA, WebStorm, and RubyMine; this issue applies to all of them). These IDEs seem to install a new version and leave the old in place. For example, after running WAU, PyCharm is available in both "C:\Program Files\JetBrains\PyCharm 2025.1.3.1" and "C:\Program Files\JetBrains\PyCharm 2025.2.0.1".

Using PyCharm as an example, WAU attempts to download the new update, starts the uninstaller for the old version of PyCharm (which is not silent and requires user interaction to proceed), immediately views the uninstall attempt as successful even though nothing has happened, and at the same time starts the installer for the new version. If no user is logged in or the user does not respond to the uninstall prompt, the installation proceeds and returns code 1223 when finished. Because this is detected as a failure, it then tries to do an install rather than an update. The installer downloads again, and when it runs it pops up an error box that says the folder it's attempting to install to is not empty. If there is no user logged in, this message box stays open indefinitely and WAU will not proceed with any remaining updates.

I don't know if mods can be used to issue a custom uninstall command for a program prior to the update attempt. If so, this may fix the problem. If not, I'm not sure what else can be done about this problem at this time other than including these programs as a part of the blocklist. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I did what you suggested. I copied the template and changed the following lines to:

$AppUninst = @("PyCharm*")
$AllVersions = $True

I named the file "JetBrains.PyCharm-preinstall.ps1" and put it in the mods folder.

Just so you are aware, the package name for PyCharm is now just "JetBrains.PyCharm" -- there is no more Community Edition/Professional Edition, They are now unified. That's why I used the package name I did in the file name. Additionally, the DisplayName registry key is now just "PyCharm [version #]". With this, the same issue occurs.

When the script gets to the point of uninstalling the program, the "PyCharm Uninstall" window comes up and requires pushing the Uninstall button in order to uninstall. If I don't do this in time (or no one is logged in to respond), the script attempts to install the update which provides return code 1223 upon completion, tries again, and then pops up a message box that says "C:\Program Files\JetBrains\PyCharm 2025.2.0.1 is not empty. Please select an empty folder"

There is no "QuietUninstallString" registry key, and the "UninstallString" registry key does not contain command line arguments for silent uninstall. Perhaps this is the issue? Is there a way to specify custom command line arguments in these cases?

But there's a problem with this version of PyCharm.
It doesn't create a Start Menu entry (2025.1.3.1 did...)

I noticed that as well. I have a separate script to create the shortcuts that I wrote in AutoIt when attempting to find another solution to this issue. I will just use that as an -installed mod. Perhaps they will fix this in future releases.

That would work if it can detect the version that got installed easily, since these IDEs install in, for example:

C:\Program Files\JetBrains\PyCharm 2025.1.3.1
C:\Program Files\JetBrains\RubyMine 2025.1.3
etc...

My AutoIt script basically searches C:\Program Files\JetBrains for the newest version of the installed program name string (i.e., PyCharm, RubyMine) and creates a shortcut to the appropriate .exe that is in the \bin folder
