What happened
- 2i2c sponsored RSECon 2025
- Jim, Giuliano and Jenny manned a stall at the conference where they got to speak to a lot of RSE practitioners and open source enthusiasts
- Jim and Jenny spoke to UKRI and learnt about their vision for Digital Research Infrastructure in the UK
- Jenny gave a 2 minute lightning talk to an audience of over 400 RSEs to highlight 2i2c's value proposition
Why is it valuable
- We learnt that users are afraid of cloud cost explosions and universities are facing a tough financial climate
- A big theme of the conference was on the importance of contributing to open source on academic research for sustainability. RSEs understand this, but the paths to engaging and contributing upstream are not clear
- We learnt data sovereignty is important to some researchers and they want to avoid vendor lock-in, but the draw of megacorps to the path of least resistance can be alluring
